we begin with the excitement and pageantry from across the region. kris van cleave begins our fourth of july coverage. >> it is always amazing to see the fireworks right here on the national mall. right now, we're at the tail end of the great escape. thousands of people have been leaving. the roads are reopening. some people have been here very long time today. they wanted to have perfect seats. they have come by the hundreds of thousands americans still in the national mall with just one thing on their minds this fourth of july. >> the fireworks. >> when they came, boy did they come. one thing about independence day on the mall, the fireworks are spectacular. >> is wonderful, excellence --

at this bright display over the centennial olympic park in atlanta. it featured a former "american idol" runner-up. >> the night turned violent in baltimore's inner harbor. a young boy was stabbed three or four times during the festivities. his condition is not known at this hour. we will keep you posted. breaking news -- a man is fighting for his life after nearly drowning. he went under in gunners lake in germantown. ben eisler has elitist -- has the latest. >> the 38-year-old remains on a respirator here at shady grove hospital. dam it you would not think of the waters as being dangerous -- >> you would not think of these kinds of waters as being

stabilized somewhat. everyone is hoping for the best. ben eisler, abc 7 news. >> thank you. investigators are trying to determine what led to the drowning of a 6-year-old at sandy point state park. the six-gerald wallace swimming at an unguarded area of the park -- 6-year-old was swimming at an unguarded area of the park. he was pronounced dead at the hospital. and 11-month-old girl is the victim of a drowning in a bathtub. she was found on responsive just minutes -- unresponsive just minutes after she was placed into the bathtub. major storms -- the power is back on everywhere, but the cleanup is only just beginning especially in the hardest-hit areas.

we have the latest on how things are shaping up. >> we haven't extraordinar amount of damage in this = -- have an extraordinary amount of damage in this neighborhood. this 110 ft oak tree toppled on to this suv obliterating it. this is just a small portion of the damage. >> it sounded like an explosion. i haven't heard anything like it in my life. >>i have lived here 55 years and i have never seen anything like this. it looks like a war zone. >> when sunday's for russia's storm rolled past -- a -- ferocious storm rolled past -- >> trees all over, power lines down.

all kinds of damage. >> the suv resembled a junkyard reject. trees took out cars, bedrooms power even the corner of this nearby home. >> the wind was knocking down trees. >> jim could not believe what unfolded outside of his windshield. >> we were watching the trees hit the wires. >> his roof was filleted. >> i have a lot of work to do. >> cleanup will take time. >> it is lucky nobody was hurt in this neighborhood. it could have been a lot worse. we do not care about a couple of trees or cars. >> you are looking at one of the cars that has been destroyed.

three of these homes have been condemned because of the structural damage to those homes. most of this neighborhood remains in the dark. live in arlington abc 7 news. the threat of rain lead to a nervous night -- led to a nervous night for many of us wanting to enjoy the fireworks. >> i was not nervous. i was confident in the forecast. it worked out great for just about everyone. here in the belfort furniture weather center you can see some showers, nothing like the wild weather. there are some rain showers but no lightning. that terrible damage in arlington and along the parkway -- that was straight-line winds. people are thinking it is hard to believe, but it was a micro- burst.

tomorrow temperatures will be in the high-60's 2 low-70's. a bit of a break -- to low- 70's. a bit of a break. i will explain more in just a few minutes. it appears that hackers broke into fox news' twitter account. there were claims that president obama had been assassinated. a series of tweets reported that the president had been shot to death in southwest iowa. fox called the tweet militias and balls -- tweets malicious and false. the soldier went missing from his base. nato quickly launched a search operation. he was found shot to death. the taliban is claiming that insurgents captured and killed the soldier.

we have some friends heading back -- if you have friends who are heading back to ocean city, that is the one spot where there have been some showers. look at the high temperature -- 91 degrees. dallas, the big d oklahoma city -- 102. every day in oklahoma city since june 1 has been 90 degrees or higher. the middle part of the country continues debate -- to bake. here is the general pattern. nothing really terrible coming our way. as the jet stream moves north we will see this little area of high pressure. it will not be as humid tomorrow. the wind will turn more to the southwest. that humidity will come back. there is the risk of afternoon showers and thundershowers for wednesday and thursday, not tomorrow. when you head out, we'll have a
